20 Tips For Success in Life
What is success? It is often defined as the accomplishment of an aim or purpose. For some people it might mean a big, fancy house with expensive automobiles sitting in the driveway. For others it might mean engaging in a cooperative relationship and raising a family. Some people view success as giving back positively to society.
You will notice that this list doesn’t fixate on finances. I think often the word success is thrown around too liberally to someone merely because they have accumulated an enormous amount of financial wealth. I’m not insisting that wealthy individuals aren’t successful because I am sure most of them are. But I think it is important to determine how that wealth was procured before we can deem anyone a success. I also don’t believe acquiring a lot of money automatically means you are successful. This is explained more in the first tip on the list.
1. Determine Your Own Definition of Success
What it all boils down to is how you define success. It doesn’t matter what your parents, teachers, friends, bosses, media outlets, or whoever else thinks. Success can only be defined by yourself through your beliefs and your actions.
As long as you do not harm others or yourself in your pursuit of success than you have the freedom to interpret what success means for you in your life. Don’t rely on someone else to tell you what success should be for you. Use your family, friends, coaches, teachers, and mentors for guidance but don’t expect them to outline success for you. You are capable of resolving that on your own.
2. Do Your Best No Matter What
If you always do your best and always give your greatest effort than how can you not be successful? It may sound trite, but there is a lot of value in it. You know when you are not giving it your all. You know when you are slacking. If you consistently put forth your finest intention to your actions than you are always going to be successful. Other people might not see it but you certainly will.
3. Don’t Care So Much About What Others Think
This is a major detriment to achieving success. Others are going to doubt you. It will happen at least once in your life. The less you focus on what others think the better.
Heed the advice of the people who will help but distance yourself from the opinions that don’t matter. You will know the difference.
4. Pursue Your Passions
Your Passion Into A Viable Business
Follow your passions because they will guide you to success. Pursue them aggressively. They will invigorate your life and serve as an anchor. Pursuing your passions is a success in itself; not everyone will take the risk.
5. Work Hard
Notice I didn’t suggest overworking. If you want to be successful you are going to have to work hard at it. There is no doubt about that.
6. Accept What You Cannot Change
Eventually you will ascertain that there are things in life that you have no control over. One of the most significant challenges is accepting this. I am still working on this one.
7. Change What You Can
Once you decide a change is necessary than execute that change. This can be scary and daunting at times, but it can also be beneficial. Success requires action steps so take action when needed.
8. Manage Expectations
Success doesn’t come to people who expect the world and everyone and everything in it to cater to their needs. It will help if you manage your expectations. This applies to yourself as well. It is acceptable to have high expectations for yourself, but try not to let it impede your own progress. Self-sabotage in the form of self-loathing and severe self-criticism is a gigantic obstacle to success.
9. Be Aware of Your Mind
Mindfulness is a powerful tool. The mind can be a major impediment for many people. Gain awareness of your mind and you will achieve something many people never do. By being aware of your mind and the endless flow of thoughts that it produces you are successfully taking the steps to live your life on your own terms.
10. Put Faith in Beliefs That Will Benefit You
Your mind is constantly at work creating thoughts and beliefs that it deems to be true. Remember that not all of these thoughts and beliefs are true. In fact, most of them aren’t. Just because your mind tells you something is fact doesn’t automatically mean it’s correct. Don’t put your faith in a belief system constructed by your mind. Save your faith for beliefs that will help your prosper in life.
11. Live Presently
Success breeds in the present moment. The past is over and the future has yet to occur. It makes sense to focus on what is happening right now because it is the only moment you can do anything about.
12. Take Responsibility
Successful people don’t make excuses for their misfortunes. They take responsibility for them and learn from them. Take responsibility for your life and you are no doubt going to succeed at whatever you want.
13. Be Grateful
A successful person doesn’t get anywhere in life without the support of others. Be grateful for the people who impact your life and pave the way for your success.
14. Serve Others and Give Back
Share your knowledge, abilities, and resources with others. Take time to assist others in need. There is no greater success than helping others.
15. Create, Don’t Wait
Success doesn’t come to those to wait and neither does happiness. Make it a priority to create happiness and success in your life. You don’t merely one day wake up happy and successful. It take a concerted effort on your part!
16. Promote What You Love Not What You Hate
Concentrate your time and energy on people and aspects of your life that you love. We waste too much time gossiping, bashing, and berating others. Think of all the positive things you could do with that time.
17. Relish the Good
Savor the success in your life. Enjoy it. Take it in.
18. Welcome Adversity
The brick walls are there for a reason. In order to obtain success you need to break through those walls. Even though it can be challenging and seemingly impossible to accept adversity in the moment, keep in mind that it is there for a reason. The less you try to run and hide from adversity the more successful you’ll become at conquering it. Adversity is going to be there so it behooves you to become acquainted with it.
19. Don’t Allow Distractions to Get in the Way (Too Much)
Sometimes a healthy distraction can serve as a nice break from the ordinary. It is only when distractions completely interfere with life goals and objectives that they become a problem.
20. Smile
I am sure not all successful people smile but it sure is more fun when they do
