Peace of Mind

Peace of Mind is that state of mind in which one is non-reactive, to external stimuli. This state of mind is not rare; we experience it at various points in our daily life such as watching TV, cooking or reading.

People often speak of ‘peace of mind’ as a destination they reach after having completed a few necessary tasks. Peace of mind, in its actuality, is a state of being. It is a way of life wherein a person is unperturbed by the external chaos.

How to Get Peace of Mind

To attain a peaceful state of mind, you must adapt the following practices in your daily life:

Look for a Silver Lining in Every Cloud

Optimism is a sure shot gateway towards peace of mind. But, being optimistic takes practice and patience. When you get back from work and begin telling your partner about how rude your boss was towards you, take a step back and think about that one thing that ‘did’ go well. Maybe your colleague complimented you on your new blouse or you received an email from an old friend. There will always be something good to talk about in any given situation. Therefore make an effort to wipe off negativity and look for the positives.

Stay Close to Whatever Nourishes Your Soul

Find that one thing that makes you want to wake up in the morning. It needn’t be your professional work, just something that makes you feel alive and include these activities in your ‘to-do’ list.

Accept and Forgive

accept and forgive

We all lead separate lives and we all have the right to get all that we desire from our own lives. This is a fact that a lot of us cannot deal with. Find a way to accept that all that is happening around you is not happening to you and forgive the ones that take you by surprise.

The soul always knows what to do to heal itself. The challenge is to silence the mind”

Every evening, once you’ve finished for the day, write down all the things you are thankful for. Also, write down what worries you but in a different language. Write down your worries as their counter solutions. For example, “Thank you for getting me through the tough Maths test tomorrow”.

There is no greater sense of happiness than the one you get from helping other people. Help in kind or in service, needn’t be monetarily. Hold bags for the old, help a child with his/her home-work, help a colleague in their work, helping instils a sense of satisfaction.

Finding Your Inner Peace

To find your inner peace, inculcate these activities in your life:

Find a Place in Nature

You will never hear of someone finding their inner peace in their dining room hall. You need to get out of the crowd, in the woods or above a mountain to truly appreciate silence.

Have a Learning Mindset

learning

Keep an open mind and a child’s curiosity in learning new things. When you are constantly upgrading yourself, developing your mind, you are moving towards a life of Self-Actualization.

Divulge in Solitude

No one can attain inner peace in the company of someone. One needs to spend enough time in introspection to truly understand his/her strengths and weaknesses. This will lead to self-awareness and the feeling of being ‘at peace’ with one’s flaws.

Invest your thoughts and time to continually develop yourself, physically, emotionally and spiritually.

We’re all searching for our peace of mind, some knowingly, others unknowingly. The key to finding inner peace is to look within rather than looking for it outside- in materialistic things or other people. Yet, the very first step to attaining it is realizing the need for it!
