Childhood
Mr Cruz was born on December 22, 1970 in Cuba. His father is a Pastor in Dallas and his mother a computer programmer. Cruz has two half-sisters and a half-brother from his father’s and mother’s side respectively. His parents had a seismic-data processing firm for oil drilling.
Cruz and his family migrated to Texas in 1974.Cruz studied at Faith West Academy in Katy, Texas. He did his graduation as valedictorian from Second Baptist High School, Houston.
Cruz was a part of the Free Market Education Foundation, where he learnt about free-market economic philosophers. Cruz was into theatre while in high school.
He has a degree in Bachelor of Arts in Public Policy from Princeton University and from Woodrow Wilson School of Public and International Affairs.
Cruz was excellent in debates and won several debating national championships. He won the title; “US Speaker of the Year”. Cruz graduated magna-cum-laude with a degree in Juris Doctor from Harvard Law School.
Early Career
Cruz was largely inspired to contribute in the area of public service by the culture of America that ensures freedom and opportunity. His stint with politics is long and diverse.
He embarked upon his political journey as a law clerk. He joined Cooper & Kirk, LLC. He was a part of President Clinton’s impeachment proceedings.
Cruz was the domestic policy advisor to George W Bush during the 2000 presidential elections as Associate Deputy Attorney General at the United States Department of Justice.
He spearheaded the George Bush’s legal team. He was Director, Office of Policy Planning at the Federal Trade Commission for a period of four years from 1999-2003.
Cruz served Solicitor General of Texas for a good five years (2003-2008), the longest serving till date. He was the first Hispanic to occupy the office of Solicitor General.
He taught at the University Of Texas School Of Law in Austin as an additional professor. Cruz is an advisor on Texas Review of Law and Politics board. Cruz joined Morgan, Lewis & Bockius LLP, a private law firm in Houston.
Cruz was declared one of the ‘50 Best Litigators under 45’ in America by American Lawyer magazine. He was selected as one of the ‘50 Most Influential Minority Lawyers in America’ and as one of the ‘25 Greatest Texas Lawyers of the Past Quarter Century’ by The National Law Journal and by Texas Lawyer.

Ted Cruz was the first Hispanic to become the Senator of Texas in 2012. In a crucial win, he routed Lieutenant Governor David Dewhurst in the Republican primary elections and state Representative Paul Sadler in the general elections. Cruz was elected the 34th US Senator.
He is a Republican candidate and stood for elections for the first time. Cruz is Chairman, United States Senate Judiciary Subcommittee on Oversight, Federal Rights and Agency Activities, and of the United States Senate Commerce Subcommittee on Space, Science and Competitiveness.
His rise in the political arena is meteoric. Cruz was Vice-Chairman, National Republican Senatorial Committee.
Cruz is a possible candidate for 2016 Presidential elections. He came first in two Presidential straw polls conducted in 2014. Cruz started his Presidential campaign for the Republican presidential nomination in March 2015. He has been portrayed as ‘the first potential Presidential candidate to emphasise originalism as a major national issue’ by legal analyst Jeffery Toobin.
Cruz’s book, “A Time for Truth: Reigniting the Promise of America” featured on the list of bestsellers within its first week of release. Cruz is opposed to abortion, same sex marriages and civil unions.
He also feels strongly against ‘net neutrality’. He is depicted as a "free trader" by the Cato Institute's Centre for Trade Policy Studies. Wall Street Journal called Cruz a “free-trade advocate”.
Personal Life
Cruz is married to Heidi Nelson. They had met when Cruz was leading George W Bush’s 2000 Presidential campaign. The couple is blessed with two daughters; Caroline and Catherine. Heidi is Head, Investment Management Division of Goldman, Sachs & Co, Southwest Region. Currently, she is on leave.

Ted Cruz was listed "2013 Person of the Year" by Rick Manning of Americans for Limited Government and by The Blaze, Front Page Magazine and the American Spectator. He was recognised as "2013 Conservative of the Year" by Townhall.com.
Cruz was awarded the title of "2013 Statesman of the Year" by the Republican Party of Sarasota County, Florida. He was nominated for "2013 Texan of the Year" by The Dallas Morning News. He was a likely candidate for Time’s "Person of the Year" 2013.
