1. Planning
This is the primary step for succession planning. One should at first create alternate plans to support the main plan, form a planning team, prepare objective and goals to work on the plan, choose the method to be followed, prepare the guidelines under which the members has to work and then finally prepare the main plan.
2. Requirements
It is very important for a leader to know which member excels in what field. No one can perform well in every task. As the company performs various tasks simultaneously, it is important for the leader to know what type of people are required to complete these tasks. If he fails to do so, then the company will not only fail to achieve the improvement in its performance but also its reputation.
3. Supporting Plans and Measures
To reach your goal, one should be able to prepare many supporting plans apart from the main plan. For example, to prepare food you have to make sure the availability of raw materials and utensils. Similarly, to put the main plan into action, you have to prepare various supporting plans. Measures are the precautions that you must take while following the steps of succession planning. Do not set goals that can be too challenging. A leader should keep all the things together to make a perfect team.
4. Communication
The most important and valuable asset of a company is its stakeholders. The leader should communicate and inform the stakeholders about the plan and the importance and purpose of succession planning. Sub-steps include identifying targets and determining communication control.
5. Assessment
The assessment helps the leader to know about the potential of the team members. The members will then be given responsibilities according to their talents. This helps the subordinates to work with their full potential.
6. Involve Every Member
A leader should consult with each and every member of its team about the loopholes and hindrances that they are facing regarding their performance. This will help the leader to solve the hidden problems that couldn’t earlier be detected. Including everyone will help him to detect and solve the problems at a faster speed and at a better rate.
7. Evaluation
This means the improvement in the performance and achieving objective after adopting the method of succession planning. This helps to know how much growth rate has taken place in the performance level after succession planning.
Comparing the new performance with the previous performance tells the difference and hence the success rate. If there are no such great benefits, then the company should alter their guidelines, and the employees should work more efficiently.
Succession planning is a very healthy way to improve the performance of your company for long term. It may be a challenging process but if someone learns the accurate method of succession planning, and then one can surely achieve greater heights in his future.
