Colin Powell was born in New York City on April 5, 1937. He grew up in the South Bronx raised by a Jamaican immigrant couple. He went to the City College of New York where he joined the Reserve Officer Training Corps for basic military service training. He was appointed by George W. Bush as the Secretary of State in 2001 and he served in that position for four years. He was the first African American Secretary of State in the United States of America.

Powell had mentioned in his autobiography that he would be haunted by the nightmares of Vietnam War. He had also mentioned how he felt that his leadership had been ineffective at the time of the war. During his time on patrol at the Viet Cong held area, he stepped over a punji stake and was wounded. He returned as a major to Vietnam in 1968 associated with the American Division.
