Sandra Bullock has gone through a lot of ups and downs in her life, but has always come out a winner. Sandra Bullock used to be married to Jesse James, the host of Monster Garage and a motorcycle builder. The duo got married in on July 16, 2005 and appeared to be very happy as a couple. Unfortunately, reports of Jesse cheating on his wife began surfacing in March 2010 and two months later, the couple’s divorce was finalized. This episode in her life brought forth Sandra Bullock’s resilience and fortitude; and she came across a winner and survivor.

Early Years

On July 26, 1964, John W. Bullock and Helga Mathilde Meyer welcomed a baby girl, whom they named Sandra Annette. John was an American national and worked for the U.S. Army, while Helga was a German opera singer. Sandra’s lived for the first 12 years of her life in Nuremberg, Germany where she studied ballet and vocal arts.

On returning to the United States, Sandra finished her high school from Washington-Lee High School and then joined East Carolina University to study drama. After receiving her degree, Bullock relocated to Manhattan to become an actress.

The Way to Stardom

During her stay in Manhattan, Sandra worked as bartender, cocktail waitress as well as a coat checker to support herself. In addition, she joined Sanford Meisner’s acting classes. This led her to act in several films made by students. This also was instrumental in her bagging a role in No Time Flat, an Off-Broadway play.

Her acting in the play was impressive and paved way for her to act in her first TV movie, followed by several roles in independent films. However, her breakthrough role came in 1994 when she was paired with Keanu Reeves to act in Speed. The film became a block-buster and raked in $350 million worldwide.

Fame and Recognition

The 1990s saw Sandra acting in the film While You Were Sleeping, a role for which she received a Golden Globe nomination. In 2000, Sandra’ film, Miss Congeniality became a box office hit worldwide and won her another Golden Globe nomination for Best Actress.

However, it was 2009 that was especially momentous for Sandra. Her film with Ryan Reynolds, The Proposal was released and raked in $317 million worldwide. She was nominated for another Golden Globe for her role. In November 2009, her film The Blind Side was released. The film was made at a cost of $29 million, according to the Box Office Mojo, but collected $309 million. For her role as a devout Christian in the film, Sandra won the Oscar for the Best Actress.

In 2013, Sandra starred in a comedy with Melissa McCarthy. The film titled The Heat, was welcomed by viewers and critics alike. But it was her film Gravity with George Clooney that won a standing ovation at the 70th Venice Film Festival. Gravity became a commercial and critical success and has raked in over $715 million worldwide since its release. Sandra received a lot of accolades for her performance, with some critics claiming this to be the best performance of her career.
