Naomi’s mother, Myfanwy Edwards, was an actress, and father, Peter Watts, was a road manager. They divorced when Naomi was 4 years old, and her father died when she was 7 due to heroin overdose. She and her mother kept moving from one place to the other for several years in England, and then finally settled in Australia when she was 14 years of age. Naomi then started taking acting lessons and going for auditions.

In 2005, she started a relationship with Liev Schreiber, and the couple has 2 sons, Alexander "Sasha" Pete (2007) and Samuel "Sammy" Kai (2008). On September 2016, Naomi Watts and Liev Schreiber announced that they are separating after 11 years as a couple.
