Kim Jong-un is the absolute leader of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea. He assumed office following his father's death in 2011. Kim Jong-un is the world's youngest state leader. He is the First Secretary of the Workers' Party of Korea, Chairman of the National Defence Commission and Central Military Commission, Supreme Commander of the Korean People's Army and the governing member of the Politburo of the Workers' Party of Korea. Kim was ranked the 46th most powerful person in “The World's Most Powerful People” list by Forbes in 2013. He is the third most powerful person in Korea.

Kim Jong-un was born 8th January 1984. His father, Kim Jong-il was the supreme leader of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea. Kim has an elder brother and a younger sister, a half-brother and a half-sister. He is believed to have attended the Liebefeld-Steinhölzli public school, Köniz, Switzerland. Kim has a degree in Physics from the Kim Il-sung University. He went to the Kim Il-sung Military University as an Army officer. He and his siblings lived in Switzerland.

Kim Jong-un was slated to be appointed as his father's successor; chief of the Korean Workers' Party and de facto leader of North Korea in 2009. He was popularly declared as “Brilliant Comrade”. Kim was appointed as Dae Jang in 2010. He was made the Vice Chairman of the Central Military Commission and a member of the Central Committee of the Workers' Party. Kim was unanimously chosen as the Supreme Commander of the Korean People's Army in 2011. He was named the vice-chairman of the Central Military Commission.

Kim Jong-un won the elections to the Fourth Conference of the Workers' Party of Korea and was appointed as Secretary in 2012. He succeeded his father to the post of Chairman of the Central Military Commission and to the Politburo Presidium. Kim was selected as the Chairman of the National Defence Commission at the assembly of 12th Supreme People.

Kim's rise in the Korean politics was meteoric. He became the “Wonsu”, meaning, marshal in 2012, the second alive “Wonsu” holder in Korea. It is the 'highest active rank in the military'. This move confirmed his singular leadership of the North Korean military. Kim enjoys undisputed powers and authority over the government and the country. He introduced economic reforms similar to those in China in 2012, and the 'martial law' in North Korea in 2013. Kim's economic measures came as a boon for agriculture and increased international trading. He was conferred an 'honorary doctorate' in Economics by HELP University in 2013.

Kim won the elections to the Supreme People's Assembly in 2014. He was selected as Chairman, National Defense Commission.

Personal Life

Kim Jong-un is married to Ri Sol-Ju and the couple is blessed with a daughter, Ju-ae. Kim has a passion for basketball and computer games. He is a fan of Micheal Jordan of Chicago Bulls and of Eric Clapton. Kim attended the Moranbong concert in 2012, an act indicative of the fact that he promoted a cultural policy different from that of his father.
