7 Basic Steps To Feel Happy and Alive
“Happiness is a journey, not a destination” – Ben Sweetland.
What these words say can’t be truer. There is a general tendency to think of happiness as a destination, something you will achieve or reach. It is more like a ‘’work in progress’’, one that needs constant endeavor. It is in the path from A to B, rather than the result of doing all correctly.
Here are a few tips to help you on embarking on the journey to self-discovery and happiness:
1. Decide to be Happy
Yes, it is a choice and the sooner one makes the decision, the earlier they have taken their first towards achieving a happier them. Believe that you deserve happiness and nobody else, but you are responsible for your happiness. This belief forces us to take stock of our situation and look for ways of improvement.
2. Have Proper Assessment
When people start the journey towards a happier them, they generally end up taking more on their plate than they can eat. Goals like ‘’I will change my job’’ or ‘’I will become thin’’ do more damage than good. To begin with, realize what is it that is making you unhappy. Is it because you dislike the work or you are not getting along with your manager? Is the solution to the weight problem a thinner you or a healthier you?
3. Take Appropriate Measures
Now that you have found the root cause to your frustration, take relevant measures to improve the condition. For example, if it is your manager that you are unhappy with, start with a heart to heart conversation. Schedule a meeting and air your feelings out. Tell him what about his behavior you dislike. Maybe he is not aware that he has been putting you down or that you already have a lot on your plate and are over-worked.
4. Maintain a Record
No, this does not mean recording your meeting with the manager or the log of your gym visits. This is in more general sense – maybe a log or a journal. Write what you feel. Research proves that writing something down helps us separate the emotion from the issue. One tends to look at things more objectively. Then as days progress, you shall see the subtle changes that come in you. This also acts as a progress tracker of your endeavors.
5. Start Moving Around
This is for all those who directly or indirectly spend their entire day indoors. Put simply, inculcate more physical exercise in your daily schedule. Maybe you can replace the 10 block bus ride with bicycle time. Get up ten minutes earlier and give that skipping rope a workout. Exercise has been proven to release endorphins, the feel good hormones in body.
6. Challenge Yourself
Try something new today. Enroll for those German classes. Try baking a cookie today. Accepting and working on a challenge helps us at two levels. To begin with it forces us to move away from our regular schedule and thereby breaks the monotony. Also, once we have successfully accomplished it, it gives us a sense of fulfillment and accomplishment.
7. Ask for Help
Yes, you read that right. There is nothing wrong with asking for a little help. Drop your kids at your mom’s while you and your hubby savor a weekend getaway. Talk to your co-workers and take that vacation. Nothing is working, seek professional help. It does not make you mad, it makes you human.
Happiness is something that each and every one of us deserves. Yes, it takes a little work but in the end, it is worth it.
Go ahead, find the newer you. Find the happier you!!!
