Monique Lhuillier was born on 15 September 1971 in Cebu City, Philippines. Her father, Michel J Lhuiller was a Filipino business magnate. Her mother, Amparito Llamas was a model. Her family owns a chain of pawnshops. Monique attended Saint Theresa's College. She went to the finishing school, Chateau Mont-Choisi, Switzerland. Monique studied 'design from Fashion Institute of Design & Merchandising (FIDM), Los Angeles.
Monique Lhuillier started her career as a fasion designer in 1996. What inspired her to specialise in bridal collections was her failure to find a well-designed bridal dress for her wedding. Monique and her husband, Tom Bugbee established Monique Lhuillier & Company in 1996. Her husband is the CEO of the company. She launched her bridal collection in 1996. Three years down the line, Monique's company introduced an evening wear collection.
Monique established her first retail store in 2001. Her wedding dress for Britney Spears and Christine Baumgartner catpaulted her in to prominence. Monique tried her hand at diverse styles and collections.

From wedding gowns to evening dresses, Monique's stores now showcase linens, fine paper, bridesmaid, bridal, evening wear and home fragrances.
Monique established a “flagship” store in Los Angeles. The couple opened a branch in Minneapolis. The store sells authorised bags, furs, shoes and perfumes. Monique establised another store in New York in 2012.
