Ricky Martin Story

Martin started his career appearing in various television commercials at the age of nine. He auditioned for a band called Menudo in 1984, at the age of 13. A month later, he was on stage performing at the Luis A. Ferre Performing Arts Center, San Juan. He parted with the group in 1989 after recording 11 albums and then pursued his interest in acting. He moved to Mexico City to act in the play, Mama Ama el Rock.

Heights

In 1990, Martin signed up with Sony Discos and in 1991 he released his first solo album in Spanish titled “Ricky Martin”. His singles “Feuga Contra Feuga” and “El Amor de Mi Vida” ranked at the top of the Latino charts. In 1993, Martin released another album “Me Amaras” together with Juan Carlos Calderón, an eminent producer. He then briefly got back to acting in an American show called Getting By. Martin was offered a role in the soap opera General Hospital. In 1995, he started working on his third album, A Medio Vivir. The album sold three million copies worldwide and Martin expanded to other international markets across Europe and the Americas.

Personal life

Martin is the founder of Fundación Ricky Martin, a non-profit organisation.

Martin is open to all religious beliefs, especially Buddhism. He was involved in a relationship with a man; however, he soon realized that it was hard to be accepted. He has been in an on-off relationship with Rebecca de Alba for more than 14 years and is also the father of twin boys, born through a surrogate mother. In 2010, he publicly acknowledged his homosexuality. Martin lives in Florida.

Martin has published two children’s books in English and in Spanish, and has also authored the book ‘Me’, based on his life.
