He has two elder siblings- Vikash and Bhavna. Raised in Uttam Nagar, he started his schooling at Vishal Bharti Public School. At the age of nine Kohli joined the West Delhi Cricket Academy, in 1988. It was his father, who took him to this professional club. Unfortunately, Kohli lost his father in 2006. Kohli was trained at the academy under the guidance of Rajkumar Sharma. At the same time, he also played at the Sumit Dogra Academy. In November 2006, Kohli an 18-year-old made his first-class debut against Tamil Nadu for Delhi.
