In 2007, Anand was awarded the Padma Vibhushan- the second highest civilian award of India. In 1991, he was honoured with the Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna Award- the highest sporting honour of India. He won the FIDE World Chess Championship back to back from 2000 to 2002.
In 2007, he made his won to the undisputed World Champion and successfully defended his title in the Chmapionship against Vladimir Kramnik in 2008, against Veselin Topalov in 2010 and against Boris Gelfand in 2012. He lost the title to challenger Magnus Carlsen in the World Chess Championship 2013. In the World Chess Championship 2014, Vishy again lost the game to Carlsen.
In April 2006, Vishwanathan Anand passed the 2800 Elo mark and became the fourth player in history to mark his name on the FIDE rating list, after Vladimir Kramnik, Veselin Topalov and Garry Kasparov. He is indeed one of the greatest sportspersons of India.
